Advancing Climate-Resilient WASH Solutions in the Niger Delta

The Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change CREACC-NG recently concluded a comprehensive Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Baseline Assessment and Needs Assessment across selected communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Over a three-week period spanning from end of June to the second week of July 2026, our multidisciplinary team visited many riverine communities including Okerenkoko, Kurutie, Kunukunuma, Oporoza, and Ekpemu among others to better understand the realities of water access, sanitation, hygiene, environmental health, and climate resilience in these unique riverine communities.

The assessment included:
💧 Household WASH surveys.
🤝 Community consultations with traditional rulers, women, youth, and local leaders.
📍 Direct observation of existing water and sanitation facilities.
🛶 Field visits across difficult-to-reach riverine settlements.
📸 Photographic documentation of community infrastructure and environmental conditions.

Our observations reaffirmed that communities in the Niger Delta face unique WASH challenges driven by their geography and #oilpollution caused by global oil companies. Seasonal flooding, tidal fluctuations, saline intrusion, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and limited access to safe drinking water continue to affect public health, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.

Building on the findings of this assessment, Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change CREACC-NG is developing a Climate-Resilient WASH Programme that integrates:
✅ Solar-powered water supply systems.
✅ Climate-resilient sanitation infrastructure.
✅ Community hygiene promotion.
✅ Sustainable solid waste management.
✅ Renewable energy applications for schools and health facilities.
✅ Nature-based solutions to strengthen resilience against flooding and climate change.

This initiative reflects our commitment to delivering practical, community-centred solutions that improve lives while protecting the environment. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, and 17, reinforcing the importance of integrated approaches to health, clean water, renewable energy, climate action, and partnerships.

Together, we can ensure that every community—no matter how remote—has access to safe water, dignified sanitation, improved hygiene, and a healthier environment.
