Empowering the Next Generation to Beat Plastic Pollution

This month, the Executive Director of the Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change CREACC-NG, Usman Muhammad (Mareri), PhD had the honour of serving as a Resource Person at the Plastic Smart Schools Initiative, powered by Mind the Plastic Naija Capstone Group and organized by the School of Politics Policy and Governance at Government Secondary School, Gwagwa, Abuja.

The interactive session brought together students and educators to explore one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges—plastic pollution—and the vital role young people can play in creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities.

During the engagement, participants discussed:
♻️ The environmental and health impacts of plastic waste.
🌱 Sustainable waste management and responsible consumption.
🏫 How schools can become champions of environmental stewardship.
💡 Practical actions students can take to reduce single-use plastics and promote recycling.
🌍 The connection between plastic pollution, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

At CREACC-NG, we believe that lasting environmental change begins with education. By equipping young people with knowledge, leadership skills, and practical solutions, we are helping to build a generation capable of addressing today’s environmental challenges and driving tomorrow’s green economy.

We commend the Mind the Plastic Naija Capstone Group and the School of Politics, Policy and Governance for championing this important initiative and for creating a platform where environmental education translates into real action.

As we continue implementing programmes across renewable energy, climate education, water security, circular economy, and community resilience, CREACC-NG welcomes partnerships with governments, development agencies, foundations, educational institutions, and corporate organizations to expand environmental education and youth-led climate action across Nigeria.

Together, we can raise a generation that not only understands sustainability but lives it every day.
