Field Technical Mission: Bathymetric Survey and Coastal Assessment

🌊 From Policy to Fieldwork: Assessing Nigeria’s Coastal Environment

A major highlight of the EPO–NHA–CREACC-NG technical mission to Lagos was a field reconnaissance of the Lagos coastal area, from FOB Badagry towards Oku, where the team had the opportunity to observe ongoing bathymetric survey activities being undertaken by the National Hydrographic Agency (Nigeria), Ecological Project Office and Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change CREACC-NG.

The CREACC team, including our Executive Director, Dr. Usman Muhammad (Mareri), PhD, joined colleagues from the, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Ecological Project Office and NHA to gain first-hand insight into the technical realities of Nigeria’s coastal environment.

The field assessment provided an opportunity to observe and discuss:

🌱 Mangrove degradation
💧 Coastal flooding and flood plains
🐟 Marine resources
🌍 Coastal ecosystem resilience
📊 The importance of reliable marine and environmental data

For CREACC-NG, this engagement reinforces a fundamental principle: effective environmental policy must be supported by evidence from the field.
Bathymetric and hydrographic information can play an important role in understanding coastal processes, supporting planning, improving flood-risk assessment and strengthening the evidence base for climate adaptation and ecological restoration.

We are particularly interested in how hydrographic data, climate science, GIS, oceanography, ecological restoration and blue-carbon approaches can be brought together to develop integrated solutions for Nigeria’s coastal communities. The survey will also use Landsat Imagery and Copernicus Marine Service for historical data on the Lagos Coastline, to aid 3D modelling of the coastline.

The Lagos coastline presents both significant challenges and enormous opportunities.

Our responsibility is to ensure that the science, institutions and partnerships needed to address those challenges are strengthened.
