From the Football Field to Environmental Action: Continuing Our Journey with Young Climate Champions

Last month, through the GreenGoals Climate Football Festival, Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change CREACC-NG engaged students in activities that promoted teamwork, leadership, resilience, and psychosocial wellbeing through sports.

Today, as part of the celebration of World Environment Day 2026, we visited Junior Secondary School, Wuse Zone 1, Abuja to continue that journey; this time through environmental education and tree planting.

Our team conducted an environmental sensitization session on climate change, environmental protection, and sustainable waste management, while also planting economic and environmentally beneficial trees, including soursop, guava, orange, and avocado, within the school premises. Beyond enhancing the school’s green environment, these trees will provide long-term educational, nutritional, and ecological benefits for the students and the wider community.

The enthusiasm shown by the students reminds us that meaningful change happens when young people are continuously engaged, empowered, and equipped with the knowledge and tools to become responsible environmental stewards.

Just as football can build confidence, teamwork, and hope, environmental education can inspire responsibility, action, and long-term commitment to a sustainable future.

At CREACC-NG, we believe that nurturing future leaders requires more than a single intervention. It requires consistent engagement that connects wellbeing, education, climate action, and community development.
Together, we are growing more than trees—we are growing a generation of informed, resilient, and climate-conscious citizens.
